Please keep in mind that these are only reduced size photos of paintings. So often we hear how much better the real paintings look than the photos on the internet. There's nothing like the real thing! The images have been reduced to a practical size and are slightly fuzzy. Rest assured that fuzziness is only in the web version, not the paintings themselves.

Recent Work

Recent work of all sizes and subjects is found here. As you can see Gary is making a strong commitment to painting four areas in particular - western Wyoming (the Bighorn-Yellowstone-Teton area), the rural part of Pennsylvania where he grew up, the California coast and Maine where which he visited as a child and where he has continued to find inspiration. He has an obsession with the fascinating interaction between light and atmosphere to create mood which has been winning him world-wide recognition and awards in international exhibitions.

Plein Air

En Plein Air is French for "in open air" and refers to a style of painting where the artist composes and executes a painting outdoors in front of the subject. The plein air work here has spontaneity and vitality but may lack some of the polish a studio piece would have. That isn't necessarily good or bad: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Western Landscapes

Landscape paintings of the great American west. Many depict the artist's home state of Wyoming. Gary has lived in the west for over 30 years. His love of wide western skies and tall snowy peaks has been with him from an early age.

Foothills of the Bighorns

The artist's hometown of Buffalo, Wyoming, sits at the base of the Bighorn Mountains. Grassy rolling plains that once fed bison by the millions rise abruptly to heights of over 13,000 feet in the Cloud Peak Wilderness. The ranches, hay meadows and wandering streams that water them are among Gary's favorite themes.

Pastorals

Modern farm and ranch scenes harking back to the homesteading days of the old west. The small hay bales of grandfather's day are now almost completely replaced by the big round and rectangular bales. The equipment has changed but the values that tie western families to the land are still the same.

West Coast

In the past few years Gary has made more and more time for plein air painting on the California coast, mostly from Carmel south along Garrapata State Park's shoreline. He says, "I can't remember when I've had so much fun. The ocean got into my blood on trips to Maine as a child. I'll never get enough of the sights, sounds and smells of the ocean and its harbors."

Back East

Paintings from the eastern United States. The small farms, big barns and wooded countryside of rural Pennsylvania where Gary grew up still hold a firm place in his heart.
